Blackwork Tattoo Prompts

A blackwork brief should describe where the solid black belongs. The strongest direction often comes from a simple silhouette and a small number of negative-space gaps, rather than detailed shading across every surface.

A sample design brief

Create a blackwork concept of a raven resting on a curved branch. Use one bold silhouette for the body, with a small open gap separating the wing from the torso. Keep the branch simple and the background empty. Plan a vertical upper-arm composition, roughly 15–20 cm tall. Show a flat black-ink design on white, without text or a skin mockup.

Name the dark shapes

“A solid raven silhouette with an open wing cutout” gives a clearer direction than “dark, dramatic tattoo.” Identify the main black mass and the smaller supporting shapes.

Describe negative space directly

Ask for visible gaps between the focal motif and its frame. If the image tool merges separate shapes into a single dark patch, revise the prompt to remove the frame or enlarge the gap.

Leave application decisions to the artist

The prompt can propose a dark-to-light balance and overall footprint. A qualified tattoo artist should decide how to adapt it to the placement and your skin; the generator cannot assess suitability.
